Introducing the Fairtrade Access Fund

It’s hard to pass a Starbucks without grabbing a cup of delicious Fairtrade coffee.  Not only is the coffee great quality but the Fairtrade certification guarantees small-holder farmers a fair price and investment in environmental and economic developmental projects that benefit the whole community.  Today, I am so happy to be sharing an exciting new  development. Fairtrade International, together with Grameen Foundation and Incofin, are launching a new Fund for smallholders. And guess who was the first company to put up their hand, and put in their money? Yes – Starbucks.

A Double Shot of Style

This summer is going to be an exciting one for Starbucks in London as we prepare to welcome the world for the Olympics and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. With all eyes on the capital, we have been busy renovating some of our most popular London addresses to ensure that visitors and locals alike can enjoy Starbucks at its very best.

Last night we reopened our newly refurbished store on Vigo Street in the West End, the jewel in our London estate.  In one of the most prominent and fashionable neighbourhoods in the city, it is our responsibility to show up beautifully, be well dressed, and to celebrate our coffee heritage. In between London’s Savile Row and bustling Regent Street, the store takes its place alongside the biggest and most beautiful luxury brands and has received high end design treatment, turning this gorgeous townhouse into our very own Starbucks ‘maison’.

Top Five Reasons to Love Skinny Caramel Macchiato

Louisa here with another delicious addition to our ‘skinny’ espresso drink line-up: Skinny Caramel Macchiato.

Here are my top 5 reasons to love Skinny Caramel Macchiato…

  1. It’s ‘skinny’ at its best - nonfat milk, sugar free vanilla syrup, no whip-- topped with a layer of creamy guilt free foam, and drizzled with a hint of buttery caramel
  2. There are only 105 calories in a Tall size (12 fl. oz) – can you believe it?
  3. There are only 140 calories in a Grande size (16 fl. oz)—just as delicious if I need a little more skinny in my day!
  4. It’s delicious iced and beautiful too… Iced Skinny Caramel Macchiato has visual layers of coffee caramel goodness and is my personal favorite
  5. It’s here just in time to help you with your New Year’s goals

Skinny Caramel Macchiato is just one of many beverages that you can “try skinny”. To try it skinny, just ask for: nonfat milk + sugar-free syrup + no whip.

Let me know what you think about trying your favorite espresso beverages “skinny”!

A New Year, a Fresh Start

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are all well rested and energised for the months ahead. The days are now getting longer and the snowdrops will appear soon so you’ll know it’s not long until spring arrives!

At this time of year some of us like to reflect and think about fresh starts and here at Starbucks we’re doing the same! Our very popular Pike Place™ Roast is making a return to our stores but with a fresh start of its own! It is now Fairtrade certified!

Buying Fairtrade coffee is only one of many ways in which Starbucks is committed to helping coffee farmers around the world, it is still a really important matter to us and so to be able to add a new Fairtrade certified coffee to our range is fantastic.

An Unexpected Visitor to the Coffee Tasting Room

We were in the tasting room, blending possible components for Christmas Blend 2010. How would the Guatemala mix with the Costa Rica? How would the Sumatra and Sulawesi combine in this year’s cup? Was the Aged Sumatra ready to be highlighted in our most important blend? We were tasting and blending and pondering these important questions when out in the hall there arose such a clatter.

It being April at the time, the guest we received was a little unexpected, as in through the door burst the right jolly old elf himself: Santa Claus. He brought with him a great challenge:

Live from the 2010 Cup Summit

Starting Thursday, April 22 we’re convening our second cup summit. In order to reach our goal of ensuringthat 100% of our cups are reusable or recyclable by 2015, we’ve invited people from all over the industry to discuss potential solutions.

We’re including city recyclers, government leaders, raw material suppliers, NGOs, academic experts, cup manufacturers, and other retail and beverage businesses.

We want to have an open and honest discussion about the entire paper and plastic cup ecosystem. We believe waste from the paper cup can be considerably reduced if we all work together on this issue.

To encourage an open discussion among attendees, we’re keeping the meeting closed. However, we want to incorporate your questions and ideas in the dialogue. To do so, we’re hosting a live chat with Jim Hanna, our recycling expert at Starbucks, and Peter Senge, senior lecturer at MIT and founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning.

To view a recording of Jim Hanna's live chat please click here.
