Case Studies

Young Person: James Sanderson

James left school without a single qualification and as a result, struggled to find a job. He became depressed and turned to alcohol. James’ self-esteem was low and family arguments were frequent. He left home and slept where he could – on the streets, in hostels, sometimes on a friend’s floor.

James became addicted to hard drugs. After two years he contacted his mum who told him his Nan was ill. He moved to Bolton to care for her but couldn’t find work so started dealing drugs. He was caught and sentenced to 12 months in prison. While inside, James’ Nan died and this made him re-evaluate his life.

On leaving prison, James sought help. He applied to the Team programme and was accepted. The programme helped James kick his drink habit and regain his confidence.

He is now working as a refuse collector in Bolton, has his own home, a loving girlfriend and a step-son. James also volunteers to support other Team programmes and eventually would like to become a Team Leader himself

Starbucks Volunteering: Jenni Raeside

“I would definitely do this again.  It’s great for us as a team to be working with such a positive initiative and I know both my team and the young people working with us got a lot out of it.” Jenni Raeside, mentor and manager to Cris Morrison during his time on placement

Starbucks Fundraiser: Stephen Langley

Million Makers: “It is a really challenging project but takes you out of your ordinary "work mode" and allows you to get creative and really push our business ideas we all have inside our heads.  Working with other Partners has been a fantastic team building event and allowed us all to broaden our skills which in turn has strengthened our own roles within Starbucks” Stephen Langley, Million Makers team – The Trust’s nationwide corporate enterprise challenge
